Dvar for Terumah (Exodus 25:1-27:19)

torahThe Aron (Tabernacle) contained the most precious gift the Jews got: the Tablets handed from G-d to Moshe. The receptacle had to be worthy of the insert, and therefore the Aron had to be intricately constructed with symbolism as meticulously configured as its beautiful design. The Aron consisted of three contiguous boxes of gold, wood, and gold, each inserted into the other, and gold plated wooden staves with which to carry the Aron. The Torah goes on to state that “The staves shall remain in the ark; they shall not be removed” (Exodus 25:14). Read the rest of this entry »

Dvar for Mishpatim (Exodus 21:1-24:18)

torahAs the Torah puts it, “AND these are the laws you shall place before them…” Parshat Mishpatim starts by going right into the social justice code of the Torah, directly following the giving of the Torah itself. In fact, Rashi explains that we start with the word “And” to tell us that just like the last one, this Parsha was given at Sinai as well. Rabbi Zweig asks why there’s a separation between the Ten Commandments and the social laws? Also, isn’t it obvious that all the rules were given at Sinai? Since the whole Torah was given then, what’s the Torah telling us that we didn’t already know? Furthermore, why would the first rule described be the one about Jewish slaves, when that wouldn’t even be possible for at least 14 years AFTER the Jews settle into their land? Wouldn’t it make more sense to start with more relevant laws? Read the rest of this entry »

Dvar for Yitro (Exodus 18:1-20:23)

torah

torah

Parshat Yitro describes Yitro hearing of the travels and trials of the Jews, Yitro being moved to convert, coming to Moshe for the conversion, and then leaving Moshe. If Yitro was so moved, why would he ever leave a situation where he’s surrounded by G-d, clouds, heavenly food, and Moshe as a teacher? And how could Moshe, as a leader, allow Yitro to just leave the camp? After all, he was the only Jew NOT to have witnessed the giving of the Torah!Rabbi Leibowitz asked this question in Majesty of Man, and answers by explaining that Yitro was SO moved by G-d, the Torah and the Jews that he felt that he had to go back to his home to try to convert his family and friends. Yitro was willing to give up being surrounded by what he obviously believed in and WANTED to be around, just for the sake of others! If this was the determination of someone that had no responsibilities toward the people he was trying to help, how much more determination should we demonstrate when we actually HAVE a responsibility to help one another!? The Parsha is named after Yitro because he was willing to change his life for Judaism. He was so proud of it that he didn’t hide his Judaism, but went out and told others how beautiful it was. If we expressed the Yitro that we undoubtedly have within us…

Numerology and My New Address

We have been living at our new address for just over a month and I have watched my family’s numerological vibrations change in synch with the new house’s vibration. Not a negative change at all, the house has influenced all of us positively – as you remember, I was a little worried about how the new house’s vibration would interact with mine and my family’s life path number vibrations.
