Reiki Precept: “Earn Your Living Honestly”
Earning a living in this sense means all types of work, from paid employment and everyday tasks, like cooking a meal for ourselves or our families, to working on our self-healing with Reiki or on our self-development through meditation or reading inspirational books.
We often confuse what we do with who we are, taking our sense of identity from the kind of job we have – or do not have. What we need to remember is that we are human beings, not human doings. We are all valuable and special; every life, every person has a role to play in the whole and we all impact on each other in many different ways, so it is important to respect any work that we have chosen for ourselves and honour ourselves by doing our best to create a feeling of satisfaction in it.
All work is valuable to the extent that we choose to value it, so take satisfaction from even the simplest tasks, and do everything to the best of your ability. There is an old Zen Buddhist saying: “Before enlightenment chop wood, carry water; after enlightenment, chop wood, carry water”. No matter how spiritual your life may become, you still need to work in some manner to feed yourself, clothe yourself, keep yourself warm and live comfortably. Doing your work honestly also means being honest with yourself, as well as others – it means accepting yourself for who you are. So just for today do your work honestly. Use Reiki and meditation to discover your life’s purpose, so that you can live what you love.
