Samhain is the beginning of the Witch’s year, a time of divination and prophecy and a time to honour the dead.

Wednesday, day of Mercury
Wednesday is the day of Mercury and is good for spells to assist money-making ideas, clear communication, persuasion, versatility, improving memories, increasing logic, examinations and tests, for learning especially new technology, short holidays, conventional healing (especially surgery) Wednesdays are also portent of business negotiations, dealing with debt, repelling spite, malice and deceit. It is for this reason that Mercury spells should always be used with a pure and honest intent. Wednesday is traditionally associated with divination and seeking answers.
Mercury hour spells are good for finding a quick way out of difficult or uncomfortable situations and for encouraging good will from others.

Mercury rules Gemini (22 May – 21 June) and also Virgo (24 August – 22 September). Mercury magick is most potent during these periods. For people born under this sign, spells are particularly powerful during this period.
Archangel Raphael rules Mercury, and as such, Wednesday is Raphael’s day. As the Harmoniser, Raphael provides healing of all kind, brings guidance to anybody who is lost (physically, emotionally or spiritually) and protects children and young people. He can be invoked for all health matters, spiritual knowledge or insight and to help alleviate daily worries. Raphael heals technological and chemical pollution as well as healing the negative effects of modern living. This Archangel responds to (yellow) Jasper and Clover in addition to the crystals and herbs listed above.
Candle magic – a purple candle
Purple candles should be used with caution. It’s a very powerful color and can be difficult to handle. The colour is associated with success in financial affairs, wisdom, material wealth, ambition, business progress and success, power, tension, success in court cases, honor, idealism, higher psychic ability, spiritual power and protection, spiritual healing, spirit contact, breaking bad luck or hexes, driving evil away, divination, greater magickal knowledge and influencing people who hold power over you.
Symbolism
The Concept of Symbolism
Symbolism is one of the foundations upon which all divination depends. Symbolism is the connection of personal and or spiritual meaning to a particular item or event. We all have a need and a tendency to externalise inner ideas, feelings and knowledge by attaching our mental connections to something external. In other words, we strive to understand our inner dimensions and the hidden qualities of life by giving external objects a meaning. Divination
A simple definition of divination is that “Divination is an attempt to foretell the future or to discover knowledge by interpreting omens or by using paranormal or supernatural powers”.
Many techniques have been used over the years and most readers will be familiar with the technique called pendulum dowsing. I recently found a list of divination techniques on the web, but cannot find my reference note so I’m not able to credit the source.
