The Earth Goddess – Gaea
The Earth Goddess (Gaia, Gaea, Ge) was the protogenos (primeval divinity) of earth, one of the primal elements who first emerged at the dawn of creation, along with air, sea and sky. She was the great “Mother of All”. The heavenly gods were descended from her union with Ouranos (the sky), the sea gods from her union with Pontos (the sea), the Gigantes from her mating with Tartaros (the hell-pit). Several mortal creatures were sprung or born from her earthy flesh.
Gaea is the name given her by the people of ancient Greece who worshipped her as the giver of dreams and the nourisher of plants and young children. The Romans called her Terra, Tellus, or earth mother. She was the eldest of all beings and the invulnerable, eternal goddess who was brought rich blessings to both the Upper- and the Underworld. Gaea has been known throughout human history as the patron goddess of all living beings on Earth. She is the embodiment of the spirit of life, growth, harvest and renewal. Gaea is no longer worshipped or thought to be real in the monotheistic cultures of the present day. However, whether people believe her to be real or not, when people refer to Mother Nature or Mother Earth, they are speaking about Gaea. Read the rest of this entry »
Vernal Equinox – Ostara 21 March
Sometimes called “Ostra”, this festival accurs on or around 21 March every year.
This is one of the Wiccan Sabbats which is celebrated in the Northern hemisphere around 21 March and in the Southern hemisphere around September 23, depending upon the specific timing of the equinox. It is preceded by Candlemas and followed by Beltane.
The name Ostara is from “star”, the Old High German for “Easter”. It has been connected to the putative Anglo-Saxon goddess Eostre by Jacob Grimm in his Deutsche Mythologie. Read the rest of this entry »
Turquoise
I often give a client a crystal when I do a personal reading for them. During the past few weeks, I have given out more Turquoise crystals than any other. I don’t consciously decide which crystal to give a client, but when I see a pattern like this, I figure there is a message in this somewhere – perhaps even for someone reading this blog.
Turquoise is both a protective crystal and it enables verbal communication. I thought I’d write up some information on this very special crystal.
Turquoise crystallises in the form of masses, stalactites, veins and occasionally in short small brilliantly coloured prismatic crystals. This crystal brings together the blue of Father Sky to the Earth melding together the energies of the heavens with the consciousness of Mother Earth. Read the rest of this entry »
Gaea – Mother Nature
Gaea is Mother Nature (Mother Earth). In Greek religion and mythology, she is the daughter of Chaos, both mother and wife of Uranus (the sky) and Pontus (the sea).
Among Gaea’s offspring by Uranus were the Cyclopes, the Hundred-handed Ones (the Hecatoncheires) and the Titans. To Pontus she bore five sea deities. Because Uranus had imprisoned her sons she helped bring about his overthrow by the Titans, who were led by Kronos. She was worshiped as the primal goddess, the mother and nourisher of all things. The Romans identified her with Tellus.
I chose the name Gaea’s for my website because she symbolises all the things I wish to bring together in providing a spiritual place that bears gifts, heals, teaches and may one day be able to provide a sanctuary
