The numbers on the faces of Tarot cards reflects stages of development and evolution. When interpreting the numbers on Minor Arcana cards, you also need to consider the suit of the card/s as the suit will tell you which area of life is affected or involved. The numbers are closely aligned to numerology. The following is a summary and should be considered a general guideline.

Ace (one)

One signifies new beginnings; the starting point of a new cycle or the manifestation of a wish/desire and represents self-development, creativity, progress, or a fresh new start.

Two

This number depicts a union or partnership – the balance of polarity between energies, yin and yang, male and female, separate and together, etc and affirms the new opportunity / beginning initiated by the Ace.

Three

The Three expresses the trinity of Mind, Body and Spirit. Number three represents self-expression, communication and optimism. This number illustrates and expands on the information provided by One and Two.

Four

Number four is synonymous with a foundation and therefore balance, security and stability. The number four is representative of hard work and discipline – just like in numerology.

Five

Five is the number of freedom, adventure, instability or change and vibrates to action, impulsiveness and impatience. The number suggests excitement and challenges.

Six

After the excitement of number five, this number is caring, compassionate, demonstrates the need for rest and reminds you to keep things simple and to seek harmony within self and with others.

Seven

Symbolic of inner life, solitude and soul searching, number Seven is a mystical number representing spirituality and wisdom. The appearance of number Seven is a prompt to look to the meaning of life, where you are going, why you are doing some things and with whom.

Eight

Eight represents material prosperity, power, influence and abundance. Spiritually, this number symbolizes cosmic consciousness. Often this card represents the achievement of material success or is telling you to sort out your affairs and de-clutter your life.

Nine

The Humanitarian number, this number represents tolerance, universal understanding and consciousness as well as the attainment of wisdom through experience – satisfaction with oneself. It represents a “coming of age” and the comfort that comes with knowing yourself. It also represents the end of the cycle started in number One and reminds you to tie up loose ends.

Ten

In tarot, number ten represents both the end and the beginning – it is the point of transition from a completed cycle to a new cycle and encourages you to make decisions – whether to stay in a particular situation or whether to make changes.

Cards in the Pentacles suit usually depict discs of gold often with a pentagram or pentagon (5-sided symbol) inscribed on the disc. The symbolism associated with the pentacle is interesting as it suggests that, just as the design is used in Magick for protection, money or material resources can be used for protection. Pentacles are also depicted as shells, bread, wheels, clocks, crystals, rings or even shields. The characters in this suit are often shown in scenes of work or play.

The suit of Pentacles represents the economy and those who work within the industry including people in the banking, legal and broking professions. Pentacles can also symbolise people who wish to better their financial or material standing, those that understand how money works and those that respect the power that money brings. This implies being grounded in the material and physical world. Pentacles can sometimes describe other types of material resources such as physical capabilities and health conditions.

The appearance of Pentacles in a suit usually symbolises an increase in finances, success in business, a promotion or relief from financial difficulties. In general, Pentacles are positive, but can suggest concern about financial security, career developments or your future (in terms of money). This means that money matters may be at the centre-stage of your current plans. Depending on the cards, Pentacles can also signify physical or health matters (positive or negative) and suggest focussing some attention on practical matters or serve as a reminder not to neglect spiritual, emotional or intellectual considerations.

Pentacles correspond to the earth element and so Pentacles represent feminine / yin energy. This energy relates to our planet as the source of stability and sustenance. As mentioned above, the suit represents practical matters, ones body, money and the material world so the suit symbolises physical resources, values, practical concerns, property, money all the things that sustain us here on Earth.

In many decks, Cups are pictured as ornate chalices that often appear double-ended as though they can be filled from both sides. Any type of vessel can depict the feminine energy of the suit cauldrons, vases, baskets, bottles, etc. Images on the cards illustrate comfort, security, happiness or contentment.

Cups describe emotions, love, romance, relationships with others (friends, colleagues etc), culture, intuition and the unconscious in addition to referring to good-natured, friendly situations.

It is important to note that the emotions shown in Cups is not only romantic love, but is indicative of friendship, compassion and kindness. Cups, like Pentacles, are almost always considered to be positive. If there are negative factors in a reading, Cups will counter-balance the negativity by helping to make the situation better or pointing out the right direction / solution. The appearance of Cups in a reading could mean that the Querant is enjoying positive and happy relationships or looking for this type of romantic relationship or friendship. It could also indicate the loss of such a relationship or the renewal process after such a loss.

The Nine of Cupsbest describeseverything the suit stands for great joy and happiness, dreams coming true and getting what you wish for.

Wands represent the water element so the energy here is receptive, inwardly-focussed, reflective, connected with emotions, creativity and intuition. Water is feminine / yin (represents the womb) and so Cups represent the ability to receive and to hold.

Cards in the Wands suit are generally brightly coloured illustrating the optimism and action contained within the cards; yellow for optimism and red for action. The card designs are usually cheerful. The people on the suit are often shown as warriors, leaders or magicians bold and creative people who charge forth in life with confidence and energy.

The Wands themselves are sometimes shown as branches sprouting leaves or flowers, as wooden staffs, poles, clubs or sometimes flaming torches.

Wands are linked to creativity and energy as well as enthusiasm, willpower and daily activities. Wands describe our attitudes, abilities or situations that offer the potential to succeed through utilising ones own talents and imagination. Self-expression or fulfilling ones own potential will be important when Wands are prevalent in a reading as will the renewal of energy, plans or adventures.

Wands remind a person to use their intuition instead of always relying on logical solutions to problems, to have fun or to be creative.

This suit corresponds to the fire element and is active, bold, linked with Spirit, self-expression and inspiration. Personal power, growth and expansion are the order of the day. The element of Fire represents yang / masculine energy and, as with Swords, is associated with phallic symbolism.

Swords are often illustrated as unsheathed double-bladed sabres, daggers or the magicians tool known as the anthame. Although usually shown as battle swords, Swords in a reading suggest power and authority used for a purpose other than physical fighting.

Swords symbolise events, situations or attitudes that may be difficult or challenging. For this reason, swords also represent the growth and development of the conscious mind. The appearance of Swords in a reading usually indicates some sort of stress that makes you think about problems or difficult situations, in other words, applying an intellectual solution to a problem.

The suffering associated with Swords can also be as a result of over-analysing situations. Swords can represent the alienation that comes from cutting yourself off from your inner self.

This suit is often depicted as negative because of the associations with obstacles, suffering and pain. These associations lead to the field of thought that Swords are spiritual because we often come to a spiritual path through intense suffering of some kind, be it physical, mental, psychological or emotional.

Swords relate to element of Air and like fire, air is a masculine / yang energy, and as such is associated with phallic symbolism. Characters in some decks are shown as teachers, scholars or seekers of answers (people who dedicate themselves to answering lifes questions). The images sometimes show suffering. When Swords appear in a reading, the Querant is prompted to take mental or verbal action rationally and calmly, to avoid mental over-stress and excessive emotion. Swords also represent communication and study.
