Surprise, surprise! The Wheel of Fortune depicts a wheel. The wheel often has eight spokes, which is a reference to the eight Pagan holidays or Wiccan Sabbats (Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltaine, Midsummer,Lughnasadh, Mabon, Samhain) that mark of the ever turning cycles of life, from rebirth to death and then to rebirth. The Wheel is also a symbol for the sun’s path across the sky. Sometimes you men or mythical figures are also attached to the wheel, signifying that everyone is tied to the wheel of karma.

The Waite deck shows Sphinx holding a sword at the top of the wheel, calmly watching as the wheel revolves. Around the wheel the letters “Rota” which is a reference to the “Royal Road of the Tarot”. The ascending figure on the right is a jackal headed man, called the Hermanubis, who is known for his keen eyesight. A serpent descending on the left side represents sexual energy. Above and below, at the four corners of the card, winged creatures hold open books. These correspond to the bull, lion, eagle and man, which are the fixed signs of the zodiac, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius.

Some decks show monkey like figures or people in flowing robes caught on the wheel. Other decks that picked a too young woman between the spokes wearing expressions that range from joy to despair. The suggestion is that we are rising and falling through the various cycles of life as the wheel turns. The Wheel may stand alone perhaps decorated with symbols and suspended in the sky. Sometimes a blindfolded woman is turning the wheel.

It is certain mythology the Wheel of Fortune is linked to the three sisters of Fate, often detected by a young woman, middle-aged woman and old woman, the first spends the threads of life, the second weaves it, and the third cuts it in the grand tapestry of life. It is often than that our own individual threads within the tapestry are interwoven with those of other people for a specific purpose or outcome in the grand design of things.
