What is Reiki?
The word “Reiki” means “Universal Life Force” and brings together healing, love, balance and harmony. In the West, Reiki is known as a healing system. Reiki’s corner stones of healing, love, balance and harmony are discussed in a little more detail below.
Healing: Reiki is a form of touch healing, a laying-on of hands. The act of laying-on of hands on human or animal to comfort and relieve pain is a basic instinct. The first thing most people do, when experiencing pain, is to put their hands on the painful area. When a child falls and scrapes their knee, a mother’s touch is often all they require. Likewise, when a child is suffering from a fever, a mother will instinctively place her hand of the child’s brow. Human touch conveys warmth, serenity and healing. We automatically put our arms around a friend who is upset; always the instinct is to touch – to heal.
Love: This instinct to touch and heal derives from caring, which is love, unconditional love. Our natural compassion rises to the fore in times of need and we feel an urge to lessen the burden of pain from another. The more you use this form of healing, the stronger the desire to love unconditionally becomes.
Balance: Reiki brings balance to ones life. In our everyday lives we get out of balance by the mundane events as well as the traumas. When the energies in our body, mind and spirit are out of balance it creates disease within us, which externalises in physical ailments. It is a blocking of the natural flow of energy and so the body cannot function freely. This energy that is within and around every living thing is called the Aura. It is an electromagnetic energy field. It is affected by our thoughts and feelings and so any disturbance in the flow can be transmitted to others. Likewise any good intention – i.e. to heal – can also be transmitted to others.
Harmony: Bringing energy back into balance engenders harmony, between both the practitioner and the recipient. It is important as a Reiki practitioner that you nurture harmony within yourself. Reiki is one of the few practices that concentrate healing of the self first, which is because we recognise the connection between all people. We come from the same source and therefore are a part of each other. How can we take part in healing others if we cannot heal ourselves?
